Pantera is a sports car designed and manufactured by De Tomaso, an Italian manufacturer. The company was founded by Alejandro de Tomaso in 1959. The Pantera vehicles of this brand was designed by Tom Tjaarda. Pantera employed new construction technique which was based on monocoque design which was introduced for the first time by De Tomaso. The first Pantera was produced in the year 1971. It was powered by Ford engines. It also used the ZF transaxle which was used in Mangusta. One of the positive aspects of Pantera is that it could accelerate 60 MPH in just 5.5 seconds. During the later part of the year, Ford imported Pantera model to be sold with its Mercury-Lincoln distribution network. The same year thousand and more Pantera models were exported and to the fate of the European manufacturer, most of the cars could not withstand the testing in the own tracks of Ford. Poor quality Pantera was remodeled in 1972. The new parts and features in the Pantera included 4 bolt Cleveland engine, compression to meet the US emission standards and increased camshaft timing. The same year also saw the introduction of Pantera L , which was known as Lusso. Two years later in 1974 Pantera GTS featured luxurious options. But with all continuous improvements, Ford stopped importing Pantera in 1975. Even after that, De Tomaso continued the production of these cars. Pantera Si was the last model to be produced in this brand.
